You don’t like to change your jewellery on a daily basis. You think in terms of clothes …. But can you really do without a little bit of bling? Especially when it comes to formal events, weddings and festivals. Worry not. Our list of 6 staples is all you need, to build your ultimate jewellery collection. You don’t need anything else. Promise.

1. Pearl Necklace

Elegant, versatile and timeless are just some of the qualities that make pearls the ultimate jewellery classic. Favoured amongst royalty across the world, pearls come in all sizes and colours. Pearl necklaces can be layered with any other gemstone string as well as gold, silver and diamond jewellery. Go for a classic, single line necklace for a delicate look or a decadent multi-layer pearl necklace if you’re looking to make a statement with your jewellery.

2. Cocktail Ring

A symbol of defiance and liberation, the history of the cocktail ring dates back to the Jazz Age, flapper fashion and speakeasies. We say the bigger, more intricate and more interesting, the better.   It’s our favourite accessory to style-up any basic look— chill cotton kurtas, saris, deconstructed dresses, pant-suits or a basic white shirt and jeans combination.  When wearing a cocktail ring, ditch all other accessories and let it be the highlight of your look.

3. Chandbali

From the Nizams, Rajputs and Mughals to Awadh royalty, none have been able to resist the allure of the chandbali. They continue to top almost every woman’s jewellery Wishlist even today. Characterised by the crescent moon motif (Chand), most traditional versions are serenaded by tiny pearl clusters which add to their delicate appeal. They may or may not have more moons, flowers, fish or jhumkas as part of the earrings.  The fact that they are made in kundan and polki make them even more versatile and easy to style. It’s our go-to piece of jewellery for wedding and festive looks and we love creating different versions of the chandbali. We say buy one in each finish – gold-plated and oxidised silver.

4. Statement Necklace

Statement neckpieces have the magical power to transform your look from ragged to red carpet.

The best way to choose a statement necklace is based on the clothes you wear most often. If you are someone who enjoys prints and bright colours, invest in a necklace that is one single neutral colour. It will work like colour-blocking and the attention will be on the jewellery as well as clothes.  A classic, layered kundan or pearl necklace, an oxidised silver statement necklace or choker—all will stand out against busy prints or cheery colours.

Alternatively, if you are someone who prefers subtle and neutral colours or likes wearing basics go for more detailed neckpieces with gemstone, enamel, carving and kundan detailing —all of which will add an element of surprise to your look.

5. Stud Earrings

Studs spell power and pizazz. Invest in pairs that you see yourself wearing with many things. It could be a multicoloured stud that can be paired with several coloured gemstone necklaces or a simple silver or gold version that will match almost all outfits in your wardrobe. Choose bold and experimental designs to wear by themselves and buy simpler versions for mixing and matching with heavier neckpieces or with outfits that don’t require too much jewellery.

6. Power Bracelet

Bangles and bracelets are something most Indian girls start wearing as little girls and not much changes when we grow up either!

Wrist jewellery continues to be an integral part of everyone’s collections because of their universal appeal and wearability. In fact, most of traditional Indian wrist jewellery is bold and statement- making.  Case in point – multicoloured navratan bangles, raised pacheli bangles, solid cuff bracelets, temple style kadas, hathphools and paunchi style bracelets (kundan or silver pieces bound together by thread) to name a few.

Apart from obvious pairing with traditional and festive clothing, power bracelets look especially beautiful when paired with formal jumpsuits, slinky or structured dresses, kaftans, power suits or luxurious leisure clothing.

Follow these simple steps to avoid the hassle of repairing and ensure a lifetime of wear.

STORE IN ZIP LOCK PACKETS

Pure silver has a natural tendency to tarnish when exposed to air, moisture and chemicals. Therefore, when not in use store your jewellery in an airtight zip lock packets. Not only does this prevent tarnishing and oxidisation, it also keeps your pieces well organised and easy to find.

AVOID HARD SURFACES

Do not store your jewellery directly on hard surfaces like stone, plastic, wood etc. Instead, line your jewellery boxes or drawers with soft mul mul or leftover bubble paper and foam from e-commerce and other packaging. This will avoid abrasion of the metal, stones and enamel work.

NO DUMPING

Remember to handle your jewellery gently. Don’t dump it all in one box. Keep in separate compartments and packets to avoid scratching, chipping and entanglement.

CHALK IS YOUR FRIEND

Yes chalk! Or even packets of silica gel and camphor. Keep them in your jewel box to absorb ambient moisture.

DON’T USE TOOTHPASTE

Leave this for your teeth. This popular home remedy does more harm than good. The abrasive nature of toothpaste will damage the metal as well as stones and pearls.

GENTLE RUB

Clean your silver with a soft cleaning cloth to remove light tarnishing. Do not use liquid cleaners on pieces with carving as it seeps into the engraving. Liquid cleaners can also damage stones, pearls and kundan.

JEWELLERY LAST

When getting ready, always wear your jewellery after using cosmetics, skincare products, hairspray and perfume to avoid contact with chemicals that may cause damage to the silver, stones and pearls.

AVOID WATER AND EXTREME HEAT

To preserve the 22kt gold polish, avoid contact with water, chemicals and prolonged exposure to heat. Bangles and rings with stones and gold-plating should be removed before washing hands. The soap forms a film over the stones and dulls the appearance.

WEAR OFTEN

Yes! We all have our favourites but believe it or not, wearing your jewellery often and in rotation keeps it happy and shiny.

My childhood was spent with an early exposure to the finer things in life. Whether it was my mother’s kanjivaram saris, her intricate pashmina shawls, her love for Ghalib and the Madhushala, the exquisite chikankari outfits she would design or her priceless collection of glass bangles from across the country. My favourite was a gold chain with a flower and leaf motif filled with vivid green enamel. My eyes would light up with fascination every time she wore it- wondering when I would be old enough to inherit it from her.
TIME STANDS STILL IN MY LUCKNOW, TO PAUSE AND APPRECIATE ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL

Like all parents, mine too nudged me towards many interests – bharatnatyam, lawn tennis, painting, even classical music for a daughter who isn’t even fit for bathroom singing! They really did believe I could do anything.

But through all that juggling one thing remained constant – my fascination for jewellery.

I remember how I would swing by after school, at my parents’ store (they are first generation jewellers) and try on all the jewellery I possibly could – much to my father’s disapproval who would pack me off to the house to freshen up, play and do my homework. Even the staff would indulge me while I pretended to be a customer carefully trying on everything with serious purpose.

PACKED BACK TO THE HOUSE, TO FINISH HOMEWORK

I went on to graduate from NIFT where I had a formal fashion education and fell in love with it. I started writing as a Fashion Journalist for Vogue India and later Grazia India. Those were good times but I was looking for more.

I had always resisted joining our family business because I wanted to prove a point. Now that I had, I was free to do what I wanted.

Life came a full circle and in stage-de-basket-international I found something I believed in fiercely. It was and is my happiest place.

TEAM stage-de-basket-international, MY FAMILY AND BACKBONE

I imagined it as a world where women could indulge in design and not think about re-sale, investment and practicality. stage-de-basket-international is jewellery for the pure joy of jewellery. Unapologetic indulgence. At stage-de-basket-international we’ve never believed that jewellery was made for lockers. It’s meant to live, breathe, age and evolve with you. The whole idea is to make traditional Indian designs and techniques accessible at a fuss free price and experience.

THE stage-de-basket-international STORE – MY HAPPY PLACE

All I’ve ever wanted was to share my passion for Indian jewellery and gemstones with as many people as I can and as the obvious next step towards that end, I give you www.stage-de-basket-international.fr

If you’ve made it till here, I know we share a common love and I hope you enjoy being a part of the stage-de-basket-international story.

Love,

Madhur & Team stage-de-basket-international
