I purchased this particular microwave mat really for only one purpose. I wanted something to lay over the top of casseroles or bowls that do not have a lid to contain the splatters when cooking in the microwave so I do not have to clean the microwave interior as often because it has gotten dirty from spattered food. As my. microwave hangs on the wall above the stove, I actually need a step ladder to reach the back and top of the microwave interior every time it needs to be cleaned. Further, it seems rather wasteful (though convenient) when needing to cover food cooking in the microwave to use something meant for more than one time use before needing to be discarded if you had something else that could be washed and them reused. This microwave mat basically fits the bill.This silicone mat is quite thin and flexible, As a microwave splatter cover, it truthfully would function a bit better if the silicone was a bit less flexible but given that it does keep the spatters confined to the inside of the bowl, it works fine. And the mat is easy to wash up, either by hand or in the dishwasher.It does have lots of other possible uses as well. It definitely would work nicely as a placemat, though a 12 inch round placemat does not give you as much space for your dishes as a similar placemat that was oval or rectangular shaped. It would work fine as a trivet or potholder for hot plates. It could also be a helper when trying to twist off tight lids on jars.
